How Much Water Should One Drink?


Whilst some scientists advise people to drink plenty of water others are against this.

?Imam Al-Reza a.s. addressed this question 14 centuries ago:

قال الرضا(ع):
إنَّ الجَسَدَ بِمَنزِلَةِ الأَرضِ الطَّيِّبَةِ الخَرابِ ؛ إن تُعوهِدَت بِالعِمارَةِ وَالسَّقيِ مِن حَيثُ لا تَزدادُ مِنَ الماءِ فَتَغرَقَ ولا تُنقَصُ مِنهُ فَتَعطَشَ ، دامَت عِمارَتُها وكَثُرَ رَيعُها وزَكا زَرعُها . وإن تَغافَلتَ عَنها فَسَدَت ونَبَتَ فيهَا العُشبُ . وَالجَسَدُ بِهذِهِ المَنزِلَةِ وَالتَّدبيرِ فِي الأَغذِيَةِ وَالأَشرِبَةِ ، يَصلُحُ ويَصِحُّ وتَزكُو العافِيَةُ فيهِ .

وَانظُر . . . ما يُوافِقُكَ وما يُوافِقُ مَعِدَتَكَ ، ويَقوى عَلَيهِ بَدَنُكَ ويَستَمرِئُهُ مِنَ الطَّعامِ وَالشَّرابِ ، فَقَدِّرهُ لِنَفسِكَ وَاجعَلهُ غِذاك.
“The body is like a clean and fertile land ready for farming. If watering is done carefully in a way that it does not drown (the crop) and is not neglected so much that it causes dryness, then the crop shall grow continuously, it will flourish, thrive and become a blessed harvest. If the crop is neglected it will be ruined and weeds shall grow.

So the body is the same (as this farm) planning for your diet shall result in having good health and guarantee wellbeing.

(For these reasons) you should watch what is:

  • Suitable for you and your stomach
  • Gives you strength
  • Pleasant for you
    Calculate the right portion for your personal needs and then make that your regular food.”

In this meaningful quotation from
?Imam Al-Reza a.s. we are recommended to find out our temperament and eat according to that. We should not recommend the same type of food for everyone as it might be beneficial for some people and not suitable for others.
